The Funeral Of Mrs. Wheatley
The funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth A. Wheatley, who died at her home, 1067 Argyle avenue, last Friday, after a lingering illness, was held Monday afternoon at Sharp Street Memorial M. E. Church. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. W. A. C. Hughes, pastor of the church. Other ministers who took part in the services included: Revs. J. A. Holmes, I. L. Thomas, W. A. Harris, W. Edward Williams, and Plato H. Green. Interment was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. John A. Bishop had charge of the funeral arrangements.
Mrs. Wheatley was born on Washington street, near Eastern avenue, 79 years ago. Her maternal grandmother was a sister of the mother of Frederick Douglass. She was the widow of the late Captain Edward J. Wheatley, who was the owner of several seagoing vessels and was also the first colored man to own an excursion resort in Maryland.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Edward J. and Raymond Wheatley, two married daughers and several grandchildren.
