Mr. John W. Grace, one of the oldest and best know residents of East Baltimore, died at his home, 313 S. Caroline street, late Tuesday night, after a two week illness from pneumonia.
 
The deceased was born in this city 72 years ago. During the Civil War he served in the Thirty-ninth Regiment of colored troops. After leaving the army he learned the trade of ship calking, which he followed for many years.
 
Years ago he was very active in politics, and at one time was a clerk in the Postoffice. He was a member of the Order of Good Hope, Odd Fellows and Knights of Jerusalum [sic]. He was also a past commander of Lincoln Post G.A.R.
 
Mr. Grace was a prominent member of Centennial M.E. Church, where he was a member of the board of trustees.
 
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Amanda Grace, and one daughter, Miss Nannie Grace.
 
The funeral services were held at Centennial M.E. Church, Friday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. D. W. Shaw, assisted by a number of ministers. Interment was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
